Culzean Castle At North Segganwell Reviews

Fantastic location and very comfortable, spacious accommodation. We have given a lesser rating for facilities and maintenance as the fridge outer door was not attached, the bathroom handle was very difficult to open and the bedroom door stayed open rather than shutting.

Once you have got your breath back from descending the 136 steps down to the cottage you will immediately loose it again when you see the stunning beach front setting. The cottage was newly refurbished when we stayed with high quality furnishings and equipment. It was very comfortable and clean. The wider setting of Culzean Castle & Country Park gives you plenty to do without having to venture out. Our Dogs loved running on the beaches and through the miles of woodland paths in equal measure.
Fantastic week again. Upgrade of the cottage is beautiful. Could not fault the accommodation clean, comfortable and very well equipped. The location is superb, who could not want to wake up to that view every day! Highly recommend.
Positive... North segganwell cottage is the perfect setting, right on the beach, glorious sunsets, peaceful and relaxing, you can walk all around the grounds of culzean castle, great place to bring a dog.No enclosed garden at cottage for dog. The cottage itself was lovely, everything you need is there, kitchen items, good TV comfy beds. Clean and tidy. Broadband was being fitted as we left. Negatives... The electric wall heaters are a little confusing to use, instructions are a bit confusing in the provided manual have to read a few times, But we did manage it, so all good in the end Needs a couple of chains with signs saying private that the NT or guests could put on either side of the cottages path when in residence as people do walk past the front all day, and look in, they could easily use the beach to walk past. And outside comfy seating and table would be amazing as it's a lot of steps to carry your own down as well as all your luggage if you take your own, which we didn't. Just sort these 3 things out and we think the cottage would be absolutely perfect. We will definitely be back either way. Thanks for a wonderful stay...
The recent upgrade of the cottage is beautiful and functionally great. The decor is lovely. The cottage is in an idyllic position.
Fantastic. Exactly like the pictures. We will 100 be booking again

This is the most lovely cottage. Its very well appointed with all modcoms you need for a cosy stay. It was nice to have high quality crockery and other kitchen fittings something you dont get often in holiday accommodation. The views are second to none with the beach, outstanding geology, wide range of birld wildlife and view of Aran just at your doorstep.

Lovely cottage extremely clean. Comfy bed. Looks like it had been newly refurbished. Loved the pictures on the walls and good quality items throughout. Would love to go back.

On opening the door the lino flooring was stuck, we had to sellotape it down so we could open the door to get in and out. The whole place had cobwebs and dead slater bugs on the floor, went to hoover them up but hoover was already full of dirt and kept cutting out, would have thought that it would be emptied before guests arrive. Shower was awful, it was either scalding hot or if tried to change the setting it was freezing and no pressure at all, such a shame as really looking forward to it, definitely need to get some repairs and work done upgrading as bits like the wall that heaters were on were crumbling off in places, the entrance doorway had gaping holes in it, was extremely cold and draughty due to this. We cleaned it better on leaving as it was on arrival and same with the cottage next door that my daughter was in, she took photos as she could not believe it was cleaned before we went. Shame overall but at least we know and wont go back, we have stayed at culzean in august and was better. The view is great and grounds are great, just a shame the accommodation lets it down.
As close as I will get to Heaven in this World

We stayed in October 2025. The property is right on the beach and is perfectly appointed for 2 people and the dog. There are 130 steps up from the cottage to the car parking space, so we made sure we didn't forget anything. The grounds of Culzean Castle are stunning with coastal, woodland and countryside walks. I would highly recommend this property.
The location is stunning. You are right on the beach with amazing views and being able to walk around the extensive castle grounds especially after closing time was fantastic. The steps to the cottage are steep so you need to be reasonably fit for access. The cottage had everything we needed we were able to lie in bed with a brew and enjoy the views. The kitchen is small but well equipped, tea pot, coffee pot, coffee pod machine. A brilliant place to stay!
Fantastic settings ,warm comfortable cottage. Hand rails on the stairs would improve the access. Also the two allocated carparking spaces were occupied by non residents on a few occasions despite the signs. Other than that it was brilliant.
We enjoyed our stay at North Segganwell Cottage very much. The location in front of the ever changing seashore and constant views of Arran, the coastline, birdlife and spectacular sunsets was wonderful. The cottage contains all thats needed for 2 people and in our case 2 dogs as well to be warm and comfortable. The 3 steep flights of stone steps to get back up to the parked car may be difficult for some people. Pack small bags so that you dont have to try and carry a heavy suitcase up there when leaving. You can walk across the beach at low tide to the castle and the rest of the coast.

The cottage is in amazing location and that's what you're paying for. The interior is clean but basic, but lacks any character or charm luckily the weather when were there was beautiful so we spent most of our time outside. I wouldn't want to be stuck indoors there no books or games provided apart from a couple of jigsaws but nowhere to do them. The kitchen is reasonably well stocked, but it would be good to have somewhere other than the fridge freezer to store food a couple of shelves would have helped. Also, given that it is right on the beach, somewhere outside to dry swimsuits etc would have been appreciated.

An amazing stay. To be able to open the door and walk onto the beach with the dogs was fantastic. I would like to point out that the walk down the steps to the property may not be easy for everyone but for us it was well worth it. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
Lovely little cottage and the views are stunning, i only left the place to buy shopping. Really one in a mllion place to stay, im looking to go back when available.
Jennifer
This cottage is in an amazing spot, its so peaceful and the surroundings are beautiful. Couldnt fault in any way. The photos online dont do justice to the cottage, very well equipped and cosy and warm. Had a fabulous time. The grounds of the castle and beaches are spectacular, our spaniels loved it. All the NT staff at cafe and shop were friendly and efficient. The steps are only a problem if youre not fit, we are oldies and managed. Thank you
Tracey
Stunning, STUNNING location! Completely fell in love and cannot wait to return. Cottage itself is warm and cosy with a log burner, very fitting for being right on the beach. It is a sheltered spot so beach walks were pleasant with amazing views to Arran, and the surprise of a waterfall in the back garden upon arrival priceless! I cannot over state this beautiful, peaceful, picturesque spot. 112 steps down was doable, going back up was more challenging, but then I am not the fittest! Would suggest travelling very light. Dogs had a better time than us! Straight onto the beach. Shower wasn't the best. A small detail but after long coastal walks it would have been a nice touch to have a stronger flow on the shower, and easier to rinse the pooches. Otherwise, it was the perfect stay. Thank you
Heather
Lovely cottage but it would have been helpful to have a little more cutlery. Also, the sign saying the parking is just for the cottages is not very obvious twice we had other cars parking in our space. It could do with more obvious signage. The gates are locked at 5pm each day as published, which is not a problem, but your details state that they are locked all day Tuesday and Wednesday they are not.. The grounds and castle are open 7 days a week.
Hi absolutely beautiful, stunning location, loved the cottages everything we needed, underestimated the steps up however didnt spoil a thing. Dogs absolutely loved it. Just loved opening the door to that view
Amanda
Absolute stunning little cottage in a beautiful location, straight onto the beach.
Valerie
An absolutely gorgeous property on extensive grounds. Its worth staying here just to see the sunset! You can get onto the beach straight from the cottage. You could, if you wanted, not go out of the grounds for your whole stay, as there are plenty of walks, the cafes serve lovely food, drinks and cakes and not overly expensive. There is also an ice cream shop on site. A couple of things would make it better the signs for designated parking could be made clearer maybe paint private parking on the ground of the parking spots. This isnt a massive problem, as there is parking elsewhere, but it would be nice. Also, people who are passing the cottages do tend to peek in to see what the buildings are. Maybe a sign with these are rented cottages, please be respectful or similar may help. We had a couple of problems, which were dealt with quickly, professionally and the staff were very friendly. Very well equipped. All in all, a gorgeous place to stay when visiting Scotland. I would definitely recommend.
What an amazing place to stay idyllic almost. I did get a fair mobile internet signal which as a big surprise after reading the cottage reviews. Great location, you just need to plan a little for meals as theres a bit of a drive to get places. Would very much stay there again!
Christine
This has to be one of the best locations for a holiday cottage, in the extensive grounds of a coastal castle, right on the beach. Idyllic for a relaxing holiday, I will be returning at some point. Cottage clean, comfortable and well equipped.
Caroline
Beautiful little cottage in very peaceful location. The steps up and down are quite a climb but we were aware of that before booking. Unfortunately the designated parking for cottage doesnt have a sign to say it is reserved for the cottages and had been used by others visiting the castle so we had a longer walk to property than we should have done. The castle grounds are lovely and its great having access to this , although the cafe and food outlets on site were over priced so would recommend taking all your own supplies.
Grandvill
Cottage was comfortable and clean. Everything you need is provided. Must commend the grounds staff and Welcome gate staff as always happy to help with a smile. We have now stayed in North and South Segwell and looking forward to when we can next visit
We had a fantastic stay in North Segganwell Cottage. The views outside the cottage of the Isle of Arran were simply breathtaking. There were lots of walks to do with our dog and we had a great stay. The 126 steep steps to the cottage are not to be underestimated, taking our belongings back to the car was definitely challenging! The beach outside the cottage is not private, as anyone walking in the Castle can and did walk past the cottage. However this did not diminish our enjoyment and we would return again.
Joseph
Only 2 issues were no washing machine or dryer, these used to be in outside building last time we visited the site 45 years ago, might still be but it was locked. And parking cause even though each cottage has it, people not renting the cottage often park in them, cause sign that used to be as you park in the bay in front of the car has gone.
Jacqueline

We generally loved it apart from a couple of maintenance issues like the shower was very cold even on hot setting the boiler was a temperamental the toilet didnt flush properly but all said and done we would look at going back in the future
A great cottage in a fantastic location withinin the wonderful Culzean Castle estate. This is our 3rd stay and we love the peace and tranquility. As others have commented repeatedly, the signage for the parking bays is very unclear and they are almost always used by other visitors. Signs fixed to the fence at the front of the bays would be a simple resolution.

We had lovely stay at North Segganwell. The cottage is well equipped, warm and comfortable. Its in a great position situated on the beach at the bottom of a cliff. Although there were over 100 steps to access the property the steps werent nearly as bad as I had imagined, they are well maintained, low rise and wide. Were looking forward to our next visit.
Cottage location, condition and facilities were wonderful. NTS staff we encountered on site were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Feeling of being a welcome guest at cottage though totally lacking. Welcome pack was pathetic, a few instant coffee sachets, a couple of coffee pods and 2 fingers of short bread.Disappointing given weve gad really hood experiences with Sykes and NT in the past. Then getting message from Sykes on day 2 of a 3 day stay giving leaving instructions...... felt really welcome!
Samantha
Absolutely magical place. Our aim was to unwind and rest , which the location and cottage was perfect for. Access to the castle grounds, dolphin costal walk and swan pond was a treat. The beach was amazing as was the view well worth the 127 steps down to the snug warm cottage. Some extra loo roll would have been nice for a weeks visit. That was the only thing we had to leave our retreat for. Well worth another visit.
Love coming here. The cottage has had a big glow up since we last stayed! I do miss the bunk beds Would be great to have the opportunity to book shorter breaks again rather than only the full week.
Elisabeth
The cottage was delightful, clean, warm and comfortable and had everything one could need. The setting perfect and the most peaceful cottage I have stayed in, only the sound of birds and waves. Watching the banners diving everyday on the incoming tide was beautiful. The many steps down to the cottage are well maintained and a small price for the wonderful location.
Elaine
The position of the cottage is idyllic. Having stayed before pre refurb the recent uplift has been very nicely done and the cottage is cosy .Having stayed around the country in National Trust cottages the welcome pack was disappointing and rather characterless compared to the usual standard. The outside light does not seem to work .
This is one of the most unique picturesque romantic little cottages If u are comfortable w the steps they reference in the description this is a hallmark movie setting for you to make your own story. Slainte Mhath
