High Rigg Shepherd's Retreat Reviews

Cassie
We just stayed this last weekend and it was beautiful, so peaceful and private with the very best intruders sheep and their lambs ! ! Me my partner and my dog had the most wonderful stay in such a beautiful place we cant wait to come back !
Stunning place and location, surrounded by nature, quiet, comfortable hut with everything you will need. very relaxing and I would recommend this place to any couple with a dog to hire if you want a peaceful weekend away with lovely walks in the country. we were greeted by one of the owners sons and on arrival there was a couple of Shepard's pies and a very cold bottle of prosecco! magic experience and we will be back!
Connor
Lovely place to stay, beds comfortable and good use of facilities. Noticed cobwebs in multiple places however didnt effect our stay
Robert
Our stay was simply fantastic. We can't fault anything.
We have just had the most gorgeous stay here at High Rigg. Our shepherds hut was perfect in every way! We had some cottage pies and prosecco on arrival which went down a treat after a soak in the hot tub. Location was perfect for us, it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere but it's not too far to drive to the shops. We enjoyed exploring Hadrians Wall and parts of Scotland during our stay. We had some stormy weather but the hut was lovely and warm to come back to each day. We can't wait to come back!
Stuart
Absolutely beautiful remote location. David spoke to us on 2 occasions and was very friendly and accommodating. We also spoke to Chris who was servicing our room after we left. He then told us some local knowledge whilst admiring the stunning views. A very nice break. The welcoming shepards pie and prosecco went down a treat
What a place so lovely for a long weekend away for a couple or even longer. So peaceful hot tube and the fire going could be better. And the bottle of bubbles left for us and wow the shepherds pie was really good
Konrad
Beautiful location, good facilities, very comfortable stay
Nice and cosy, very clean, with excellent hot. The cottage pies and bottle of bubbles was a nice touch along with the slippers and bath robes.
A beautiful and quiet location. Friendly owners but not at all intrusive. All appliances were good and everything you need. Cozy is an understatement, but gets very warm with the Woodburn. Even though we were at the end of October, the hot tub became the entertainment for the evening. Relaxing, homely and a good location and base to discover the lakes and North Pennines. Definately going back.

I would highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to escape into the countryside. The views are stunning, its peaceful and quiet, and the accommodation in this hut was absolutely marvellous. It was clean and well presented, some extras were left for us on arrival and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay secluded in our surroundings. The hot tub was great and the owner enquired if we were enjoying everything which we responded with yes. We have stayed in shepherd's huts before and this was definitely up there in the top 2. Give it a go... you'll love it!
Louise
We had a lovely stay at the retreat. Perfect setting. The hut has everything you need & was clean & fresh. The exterior is looking dated & I can understand why some reviews say it looks nothing like the photos because it doesnt. A freshen up outside would make all the difference. Update the advertising photos. The owner came & introduced himself & we also asked for extra tea & coffee which was hand delivered within minutes. Above & beyond service, thankyou
Beautiful retreat, the shepherds hut was done out to a luxury standard and lots of lovely finishing touches. The hot tub was well maintained and undercover so was nice after a long walk on a rainy night. The complimentary shepherds pies were a great idea and absolutely delicious. Perfect stay for a busy couple getting some much needed rest!
Kamila
Amazing place! Our stay was perfect. The cabin has everything that's needed. The views are incredible and the sheep were keeping us entertained. Loved it and hope to be back in the future. Highly recommended
Caitlin
Lovely little getaway. Lots of nice little touches like the slippers and dressing gown, lots of blankets and firewood as well as the dog bed and towels. We were in the hot tub multiple times a day, it was totally private once the cover was off and you could look at the idyllic view. What I hadn't realised was that the sheep field was right outside the hut and they would come right up to the fence. Our doggy got a bit excited so I would recommend a different hut for those reactive pups unless you want to spend your week training like we did. We did bring her large crate which managed to fit with still some room to move. Lots of options for dog walks nearby including a secure dog field which was a bonus.
We had a lovely stay at High Rigg. Directions were easy to follow and on arrival, the property was so clean and well presented. The views from the property were stunning. It was lovely to see all the sheep and lambs in the field where our retreat was. We met one of the owners whilst getting ready for a walk, who was very welcoming and gave us some walking destinations which we loved!
Elizabeth
We really enjoyed our break and were blessed with fabulous weather. However we had a bit of trouble finding the hut initially. Our sat nav took us nowhere near High Rigg. The hot tub was a surprise to us! Our fault! But I think a beach towel would be useful when having pre and post showers. It would have been nice to have had the outside, particularly cobwebs just brushed However I enjoyed doing it !! Views were fab. Loved the sheep so close. The hut inside was spotless, lovely comfy bed and nice bedding. Lots of extra cushions and blankets and well equipped.Thought had gone into design and equipment.Would have liked a small freezer area in the fridge.Ice for.the gin!Our host was very friendly and helpful. Lovely peaceful break.
Absolutely spoton! Very polite from the owners, great customer service skills. The cabin was perfect. It was clean and maintained and I will definitely be visiting again in the future.
Lovely little cabin with beautiful views. For a small space it has all the facilities you could need, and relaxing in the hot tub with a cold prosecco was perfect after a day out walking. Good to know if you're taking a dog the adjoining field had ewes with their lambs when we stayed which thankfully our dog wasn't too bothered about. So many lovely touches made this stay memorable the welcome fizz and pies, the thoughtful inclusion of dog bed and towels, and the robes and slippers for the hot tub. We're already planning a return visit!
Myself and my partner had an amazing time. We arrived on Friday and everything was perfect. We did have a bit of trouble finding our parking spot but that's because we weren't sure which cabin was ours. Once we found it there were no issues. The addition of the sheep and lambs was really nice. So glad weather was on our side throughout the weekend. Coming back from the lake district and getting into that hot tub to relax was such a treat. The hosts were lovely, very knowledgable of the area and able to talk to them about quite literally anything. Don't know if we just couldn't find it but having a hair dryer in the cabin would be great, we ended up going out to buy our own from Carlisle. We will definitely be back next year. As i miss it already.
We had a fabulous time staying at the shepherds hut at High Rigg it was very comfortable and clean and the location is so peaceful and private . The hot tub was very relaxing too. The location is great for visiting other parts of Cumbria and The String of Horses pub is nearby which has a fabulous menu and great atmosphere. We will definitely be staying here again thankyou to our hosts for the lovely Shepherds pies and bottle of fizz on our arrival .
Steven
Exactly as described couldnt fault our stay. High standards of cleanliness, great facilities and a cosy romantic setup. We really enjoyed our stay, thank you.
A beautiful and cozy accommodation with a stunning backdrop. The hosts were superb, welcoming and accommodating ensuring our stay was relaxing and we had all we needed. You are not overlooked at all so you feel you are on your own in your own private grounds. We will definitely visit again soon it was everything we needed from a mini break
Sharon
This was a wee treat for myself and my daughter after Id recovered from a knee operation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The lodge had everything in it you could think of. I cooked every night and everything I needed was available. The only thing I would say is its maybe a bit smaller than I thought it was going to be from the photos but it was comfortable and cosy. Its in a nice quiet wee bit on the countryside so it was nice and peaceful. We googled places to go walks nearby as we had the dog with us so we went exploring! Night time was spent in the hot tub chilling!! It was a bit chilly getting out its January after all but that didnt put us off! I would definitely recommend and would use again.
We had a great 3 night stay. The shepherd hut was beautiful with everything you need. The hot tub was great after a day of walking. I would totally return and recommend.
Frances
Had a wonderful short stay with the dog. Hut is small as pictured but well provisioned with lots of thoughtful touches. Pies and fizz and a readytogo hot tub on arrival was great. We had an issue with the hot water tank that was resolved very quickly and without fuss. I will say that the toilet is really quite narrow so if you're on the larger side you will find it a bit of a squeeze. Felt nice and private. Despite the storm we were nice and cosy inside. Would recommend.
Dominic
We had a really lovely, quiet and chilled stay for our honeymoon. The hut is exactly as described. Hot tub was lovely and the bed was very comfy. The pies were delicious and the bottle of fizz was a nice touch. When the batteries in tv remote ran out a quick text sent and replacements were brought up immediately. The only negative comment is that there were no condiments or cooking oil only salt and pepper and I only make this observation based on previous experiences of air bnb places and other huts Ive stayed in where those things are a given. However I cant recommend this place enough for a relaxed getaway it was brilliant.
Lovely hut, good directions and the property was very clean especially the hot tub. No cafeteria! But everything else was great.
This was amazing break for me and my partner they made us feel very special we ... This was amazing break for me and my partner they made us feel very special we got some wood and shepards pie on arrival with bottle bubble I definitely will stay hear in future tammy and barry
Jacqueline
We had a lovely holiday. Plenty of peace and country air. The shepherds hut was clean, comfortable and cosy with everything you need. The shepherds pies bottle of fizzy wine and the perfectly heated hot tub were a welcome treat on our arrival. Thank you so much.
Eleanor
An absolute fabulous stay, loved the surrounding area and being in the middle of no where. Only one complaint regarding the Hot Tub, usually when we stay at places like these, the hot tubs are cleaned ph and cleanliness checked regularlyalmost daily and this wasnt the case here. However, this wouldnt stop us from returning as we did love our stay. Also, the hosts David and Brenda were fab and were happy to help when needed. We have already recommended this place to people we know.
We have just got back from our very pleasant stay at the Shepherds retreat and I can say that we had a splendid time be it sipping tea on the veranda overlooking the surrounding hills with the baa'ing and the sounds of the birds supplying the sound track or chilling in the hot tub which was so relaxing and secluded we felt like we could of been the only humans for miles around. We spent little time indoors as we were so lucky with the weather which allowed us to use the outside space to its entirety. Even when we had a short rain shower we retired to the area which encompasses the hot tub where there was plenty of space and additional seating. Inside we found a kitchen where it is great to see that the owners have listened to the feedback from previous reviews of items that some may expect like scissors and additional loo roll which we are happy to report were all in attendance and using the kitchen was easy enough to do for quick meals like a bacon sandwich for breakfast and we were also able to cook the lovely shepherds pie that was waiting for us in the fridge with some roasted carrots and peas that we brought along. Were it lacked was worktop space so we utilised the table in most cases as we never ate there. The bed was very comfy indeed, sleep was so very important as we had busy days of walking to do and good sleep we did get. The bathroom was tight in space but manageable and the shower was lovely, no compromise with limited hot water or a cold feed only it was a perfect hot shower. Right now for the pooch. Iris our cockerpoo loved it and felt immediately at home. We brought with us our little dog bed and towel but we need not have as it was provided by the owners. We could tell she was very happy with her outside space as there were areas where she could of escaped if she did feel the need but she didnt. She stayed mostly on her bed watching over the sheep nodding in and out of naps. Because of how warm it was we never had need of the log burner but we did have the fire pit in the garden on one evening more for atmosphere than the warmth it provided and there was plenty of kindling and firelighters to get it going as well as a large basket of logs. I imagine the Shepherds hut would be super cosy in winter with a little snow falling about the place. The communication we had with the family who own the property was great with recommendations for walks, runs and places to eat which we took on board and enjoyed. Although the weather we were having was good the weather previously to our arrival was not great for anything other than ducks so a lot of the ground was quite boggy in the woodland walks that were a short drive but really nice despite it. We would recommend Geld Wood which we did a circular route of around 3.7 mile with 75 of that being very good to let Iris of the lead to explore. We would love to return in the future, we have had a fantastic time and exploring the villages and towns around the property has been great. We would highly recommend
We had a lovely 3 night stay at this hut and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful break away! It was very comfortable and clean, and had pretty much everything you would need the robes and slippers, as well as pies and bottle of fizz in the fridge were a fab extra touch. The hot tub was great and we used it every day, with a lovely view of the sheep right outside and the hills in the distance. The pictures of the listing do need updating though the hut is now stained green and some of the furnituredecor has been updatedchanged so we were unsure if we were at the right hut at first, but its still wonderful! We were looking forward to the swing chair on the decking, but thats unfortunately no longer there not a big deal, just a small disappointment that wouldve been avoided if the pictures were up to date! We did have to get an extra loo roll as there was only one, but again not a big deal! TV had Netflix, Prime etc as well as freeview, so we werent short of entertainment in the evenings. Overall we really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely come back again!
It was such a gorgeous place to stay and was so cozy and comfortable. It was a lovely touch to have a pie and fizz on arrival as we had been travelling all day! Would 100 recommend to anyone for a nice getaway, the owners were lovely too!
We had an absolutely perfect few days in Shepherd's Retreat. Definitely would book again and recommend to others. The personal touches like the shepherds pie and sparkling wine in the fridge made our stay even more special. Very happy with this holiday.
We loved our stay at High Rigg and would definitely return! A few things would have made our stay easier, which I have also seen in other previous reviews so its a shame that the owner hasnt taken these on board one toilet roll for a 4 night stay isnt good, also one bin bag these are things you dont expect to have to bring with you and no scissors. However, the dog bed and dog towel was a thoughtful touch and we LOVED the shepherds pie and wine on arrival! The hut looks significantly different on photos abit more fresh with more facilities but we still enjoyed our stay regardless. Thank you
Amanda
A fantastic short break away at the shepherds retreat, beautiful eyecatching entrance, relaxing and didn't leave the cabin for the whole stay. Clean, comfortable, and luxurious! Hot tub was fantastic sipping the complimentary sparkling wine! Shepherds pie was certainly a delight. The views are fantastic and the enclosed space is perfect for your fur friends. The only slight negative I could give would be the cabin did not match the photos on the website, it had been stained green since originally listed, made us think it was not the correct cabin, maybe a sign next to the parking would help. Lovely helpful owner, already planning our next visit.
Nicole
We have had a lovely relaxing stay this weekend, we took our dog Stanley along there was a enclosed garden for him there was one gap but we just blocked it with a chair we asked if he was able to use a field in front of our hut for some off lead playtime, they got back to us streight away with a yes so this alone was perfect him being able to play with no worries. It was everything we needed and a big comfy bed, so quiet and peaceful and if it wasn't cloudy we would have been able to see all the stars. The grounds and lake are beautiful and you could see for miles. We will be back

We had a lovely few days away at High Rigg thankyou. The property was unique and quirky and very peaceful. The hot tub was fantastic and we enjoyed a lovely BBQ in the sunshine! Comfy bed and very clean when we turned up. The shepherds pies in the fridge was a lovely welcome touch. In the spirit of honesty, there are definitely some things that could improve the ease of stay, especially those guests staying for more than a couple of days 1. Scissors in the kitchen 2. The chairs were far too big, we spent most of the time moving them around so we could cook comfortably 3. The path from the parking space to the hut is half slabs half grass this would be really tricky in winter! 4. Spare bin bags would be good 1 for a 4 night stay isnt enough 5. A small freezer section in the fridge would be great as some ice for your drinks would be nice to have 6. Knives were very blunt, we could barely cut an onion up Unfortunately on our departure day, we were packing the car an hour and a half 830am before check out 10am and we had one of the owners ask if the hot tub could be emptied we were still moving our belongings out and felt this was a bit inappropriate. Overall we had a very nice relaxing break and would recommend for those couples aiming for a romantic break.
Amazing stay! We stayed for three nights with our little cockapoo in the Shepards Retreat. The short walk from the parking area to the hut is beautiful, the hut is set up on the hillside with stunning views from your balcony and hot tub. The hut has everything you could need, the log burner and fire pit were a lovely addition to a cold evening, with a small starter kit of logs kindling and fire lighters provided. The hot tub on an evening was just amazing, watching the sun set, with the dressing gowns and slippers they provided. There are beautiful walks right on your doorstep, but I highly recommend a short drive out to High Stand Forest. The hut was so peaceful in beautiful grounds, the owner was really friendly too. Our dog absolutely loved it, and we were so sad to leave. We already cant wait to return!
