The Ferry House Reviews

Pauline
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Very comfortable and house has the perfect setting. Only negative is the now 9.30am check out. With very young family not easy so we left a day early.

We loved our stay at the Ferry House. The location is amazing, so close to the sea and the house is filled with old world charm. The house was spotlessly clean, with plenty of fridge space in the quirky kitchen and plenty of crockery, cutlery and glasses. The bedrooms were cosy with comfortable beds and quilts. We had fun with table tennis and a very cosy evening by the fire with no electricity while storm Amy raged outside. It's a great centre to tour Donegal and the surrounding area. The house's only drawback was a lack of a walk in shower.

All was good although one annoying issue was the external floodlights that constantly came on every night. They would start and stay on for various length of times generally 30secs or so then switch off before instantly coming on again. I could not see a switch to turn them off or see any reason ie foxsquirrel or any thng else why they should always basically be on and the light shone into the end ensuite window, so I closed the shutters to keep the light out although I like natural lightdarkness to be seen minor issue really once I'd close the shutters each night.
Great location near the Lough and our dog loved it with his floating aid jacket on and the enclosed back garden. The house is very old and has all of the old features. The only downside is the showering facilities one electric shower that cuts out on a timer which isnt great if youre a woman lol the tv reception was a bit shaky and Uk catchup apps dont work in Ireland. If those 2 areas were improved I would have given it five stars and not just four.

An Unforgettable Retreat with Mesmerizing Views and Comfort Nestled next to the waters of Lough Swilly, Ferry House offers a truly stunning location for a peaceful getaway. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the picturesque setting and the tranquillity that enveloped the area. One of the highlights of our stay was the simple yet perfect pleasure of sitting at the kitchen table and looking out at the water of Lough Swilly. This daily ritual became a cherished part of our mornings, the everchanging light and the movement of the water provided a backdrop that set the tone for the day ahead. The charming town of Ramelteon is just a short drive away from Ferry House, offering access to most amenities you'll need to enhance your stay. Ramelteon is a delightful town with a rich history and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can take leisurely strolls, explore local shops, and enjoy the friendly vibe of a closeknit community. The surrounding area also boasts a number of beautiful beaches, each with its own unique character. Whether you're looking for a quiet spot to unwind or a more active beach to enjoy water sports, there's something for everyone. Ferry House itself exudes warmth and comfort. The house was very cosy and comfortable, making it a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. One of our favourite features was the lovely Rayburn in the kitchen. Not only did it provide a cozy warmth, but it was also incredibly practical for drying wet dogs and raincoats after our beach outings. The kitchen is well appointed, with everything you need to cook full family meals. On the days we chose to dine in, we were able to prepare delicious meals for our group of seven adults with ease, then retire to the lounge to relax in front of the open fire to reminisce about the day over a glass or two of wine. Those who still had a bit of energy left can easily burn that off by battling each other in a game of table tennis For those nights when we wanted to treat ourselves to a meal out, we found a gem of a restaurant in Ranny. Ripples Restaurant, located just a 25minute drive away, and is a firm favourite of ours. The food and service is superb, and to top it all off, the restaurant is dogfriendly. We visited Ripples in both January 2023 and January 2025, and despite the offseason, the quality of the food and service remained outstanding. We can only imagine how popular this place must be during the summer season. If you're planning to visit, we highly recommend giving them a call to reserve a table. You won't be disappointed! The bedrooms at Ferry House were equally impressive, with extremely comfortable and cozy beds that ensured we had a restful night's sleep. The attention to detail in the dcor and the quality of the furnishings contributed to the overall sense of luxury and relaxation. After a day of exploring the beautiful surroundings, it was a pleasure to return to such a welcoming and comfortable space. Our dogs also thoroughly enjoyed their stay at Ferry House. The spacious outdoor area provided plenty of room for them to play and explore, and the proximity to the water meant they could enjoy refreshing swims. It's clear that Ferry House is a petfriendly property, and we appreciated the thoughtful touches that made our furry friends feel right at home.

Beautiful property in a stunning location. We very much enjoyed our stay.
We loved our stay at Ferry House, very relaxing, beautiful sunrises and moon over the lough. We saw loads of wildfowl, including and huge stork which had a little forage on the shore close to the house. We had one day of stormy weather on the first night, the swell caused the water level to rise on the lough. Marty from the boat house appeared in the darkness with his head torch and banked our door with sandbags just in case. They were not needed in the end, but we felt well looked after, Marty is lovely. We visited many beautiful spots during our stay including Giant's Causeway, the lighthouse, Glenveigh National Park and Ards Forest. We had a lovely day in Derry and some of our party visited the Science Museum in Belfast. Letterkenny is great for bigger shopping and eating out take a look at the Hiring Fair Monument in Letterkenny Square. The house was very cosy and comfortable, lovely Rayburn in the kitchen, great for drying wet wellies and raincoats. The only thing we needed and didn't take with us was tableware cups, plates and bowls for very young children. Otherwise, we managed to cook full family meals on the days we ate in. The house is in a very peaceful, secluded spot, we quickly found ourselves becoming absorbed into the landscape and ebb and flow of the tides, it was lovely.

What can you say about the Ferry House that hasn't already been said. It is in a stunning location next to the Lough. The views in the morning were wonderful. Watching the Harvest moon shining on the water, the sunrise, all very beautiful. The Ferry House was clean and very well appointed, although a hair dryer and a cork screw would have been nice! The location is excellent for exploring North West Donegal, with the pretty little town of Ramelton nearby, yes we fell in love with the Blue Goat Deli. Letterkenny has all that you need. For dog owners the enclosed large rear garden is excellent. The bathrooms are a little tired and an update to the shower would be a bonus. But you need to understand that it is a very old property with a few foibles that go with the territory. Would I recommend The Ferry House? Absolutely 100.

The property and location were absolutely amazing. Beds and living room were really cosy and comfortable. Marty was so nice and turned on the Rayburn during our stay which made the kitchen super warm. The only downsides I'd say is that the main bathroom could really do with upgrading as could the oven. Also when we got there the house was full of spiders and spiderwebs. Maybe the cleaner doesn't hoover the cobwebs because she doesn't want to kill the spiders but it gave a really bad impression of hygiene and the spiders did freak some of the group out.
We really enjoyed our time at Ferry house but I appreciate the location and even the age of th house wouldn't appeal to everyone I know. It was perfect for us though. There was 6 of us and a dog and at no point did we feel on top of each other
We enjoyed a tranquil stay in this beautiful old house on the edge of Lough Swilly so much to do in the locality and I don't know when I last slept so well in the very comfy bed! We were delighted to be able to have our dog with us and we had a truly enjoyable stay, it was so peaceful. It's a pity the weather was so cold outside for July but c'est la vie!
Andrea
A fabulous, characterful house. Amazing views, tranquil setting but only a short drive to shops and restaurants.
Caroline
Such a fabulous stay, The location is stunning and with the beautiful views of the Lough from nearly every window it meant we could enjoy the view regardless of the weather! Well definitely be coming back for another stay.

The Ferry House is the perfect place to get away from it all. Sitting at the kitchen table looking out at the water of Lough Swilly is how I would like to spend every morning. Ramelton is just a short drive away with access to most things youll need to enjoy your stay and there are a number of beautiful beaches to choose from in the surrounding area. The house also benefits from extremely comfortable and cozy beds. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, as did our dogs.
This is a charming old property, which is very comfortable and well furnishedequipped for a group of friends or family. The bed linens were good quality, and kitchen had everything needed, to cater for a group.
Fabulous house. Wonderful views over the lough. Great location to explore the area. Everything was super within the house. Could do with a better shower in one of the bathrooms. Would definitely return.
Judith
Absolutely fabulous location, a breathtakingly beautiful spot. We all enjoyed our holiday immensely, lots to see and do. We did have a storm to contend with but that didnt stop us getting out and about. We had both fires on every night it was so cozy and warm. The beds were comfortable with feather pillows and duvets. Its a very old property with lots of charm, some things arent perfect but that adds to the ambiance. All in all a fantastic holiday in a beautiful country
This amazing cottage is in a dream location. The views over the water at night are simply breathtaking I stayed there for almost three weeks and I got to witness the Northern Lights, a stunning rainbow, and just fantastic views of the moon on the water every evening. The house is perfect spotless, cosy and full of character. The only problem I had being there for 3 weeks was the lack of drying facilities just one very small clothes horse. Otherwise, simply perfect.

We LOVED our break at Ferry House. It was everything we wanted and more. We always take our dogs away every JanFeb to somewhere remote for some down time and this trip has been a huge hit with us. Walks on the beach, glorious sunsets, local food and drink, day trips on the Wild Atlantic Way it was perfect from start to finish. I think you are very lucky we didn't claim squatters rights and decide to stay
Thomas
The owners were very attentive, propped in to see how we were getting on. The beds were comfy and the lounge perfect for after dinner gamesrelaxing. The views across the lough were lovely! A few improvements The property has an incorrectly fitted and poorly functioning stove in the dining area the 5' flue is too small for the appliance, needs a 6 flue . The upstairs bathroom would benefit from the addition of curtain or blind.
Celine
Wonderful, idyllic house in the dreamiest of locations, right by the water. Really comfy beds and sofas and very homely. Characterful house with everything we could wish for.
Loved the Ferry House! It was a gorgeous property 34 minutes drive outside of Ramelton. Its a great base for exploring that part of Donegal with Glenveagh National Park and great beaches in Port Salon and Rathmullan not too far by car. The beds were super comfortable and it was brilliant being able to take our 2 dogs, who loved the enclosed rear garden and beach Lough walk in front of the house. The House has good facilities but the bathrooms were a bit outdated and if you have older guests the step down to the upstairs bathrooms can be a bit tricky. Some additional bits in the kitchen, like egg cups and providing some milk and bread for arrival would be a great touch to add. Have already recommended to friends and family.

The Ferry House is an idyllic escape. We spent a week here in March and were lucky enough to get wonderful weather. There is so much to do within a short drive and you have the Lough right outside your door. The house is well equipped and the bedrooms were large and very comfortable. We will definitely be back.
Christopher
A stunning location right on the water. The Ferry House is comfortable and warm. The house is old and full of atmosphere with open fires and wooden shutters. The owners were kind and helpful whilst giving guests privacy. The local area is full of interest and beauty with lots to see and do. The bathrooms have seen better days and could do with upgrading but are clean and serviceable. The neighbours were welcoming and helpful and really added to our stay. We loved it and would recommend it to anyone.
Fantastic unspoiled and fascinating location. Truly another world. Huge house, a bit remote but great neighbours. No distance really from great golf, a National Park and sensational coastline. Heavenly! Jules and Carole

Brilliant holiday. Only issue is that soil pipe from bathroom was blocked when we got there with human waste on patio at back. We were fine to use other toilets but this would be a major issue for some. Living room only had 6 chairs despite the accommodation being for 8. Absolutely brilliant place though. Wonderful location with lovely people.
We really enjoyed out stay despite inclement weather. The house is very well renovated. Loved the sash windows, Rayburn stove, Beautiful lounge, Spacious bedrooms and comfortable beds. Also the garden was very well enclosed and a great size for our dogs.Loved the beachfront location. When we needed to contact the owners they were friendly and very helpful and Marty was very helpful also We felt well taken care of. Only took 1 star away from accuracy of listing because advertised as set on a private cul de sac, the small road outside past the cottage was used regularly by people walking especially dog walkers and occasionally drivers. It meant that we couldnt let our anxious dog off the lead on the beach directly opposite the house which was a pity ,in case anyone appeared. A large PRIVATE notice at the entrance to the cul de sac would help. We found the sink in the utility room rather than the kitchen a little getting used to ,and the hand held shower head in the ensuite ,but in general loved the feel and history of the house. We loved Donegal , and despite the few points above, would highly recommend and would love to stay in Ferry House again.
