Heselwood Reviews

Lovely, lived in house, a little bit of TLC wouldnt go amiss but everything you need in the kitchen to make a big family meal, there is nice comfortable seating and a lovely big dining table. Great garden for the kids to explore with a lovely view of the seaside beyond. The steep hill to and from the beach is a bit of a challenge at first but my 86yr old Dad did it and there is a pub half way up the hill! Lots of lovely eateries nearby, a great fossil beach too. Swimming for kids is great as no shelving just nice gentle sloping. I would advice you take the following with you Tea towels, toilet rolls, bin bags and dishwasher tablets if you intend to use it. Tea, coffee milk and seasoning as there is no welcome pack. We all had a great time!
On the plus side, the house is spacious and secluded , relatively close to Lyme Regis centre, with ample off street parking. However, on the down side, this property is in need of a serious maintenance overhaul both inside and out. A quirky layout, lots of old, mismatching furniture, electrical and plumbing issues and a very hazardous staircase leading to the two small bedrooms in the loft The garden has great views and although is described as 'wild' , it is actually quite unsafe for anyone who is not sure footed. Pathways and steps are particularly risky.

Weekend away with the family celebrating mums 75th Birthday. 7 adults, 3 children. The cottage was in a great location. The surrounding grounds and garden were lovely. A great view from the rear garden. Inside, the kitchen had all you could want to cook for large groups. Dishwasher was a lifesaver. The front living area was substantial and comfortable. Bedrooms on the first floor were large and comfortable with a double bed and a single bed in each of them. Up to the 2nd floor were 2 very small cupboard type rooms. These werent great. Be careful navigating the stairs up to these rooms particularly children or elderly. Saying that, it didnt detract from our enjoyment. The hosts were available via text message and got back to me quickly with information. They were nice and allowed us in slightly early to decorate with balloons and banners. Unfortunately one of our children fell ill on our last night and the hosts were very kind in allowing us to check out late as our train home was mid afternoon that day. Im very grateful to them. On the whole, we loved cottage and its space. We would go back.
We really liked the house but it could do with a little bit of tlc. It's ideally situated out of the town centre although climbing back up the hill took a little getting used to.

We had a great week with family in a charming house. Just one thing to advise people of not many towels provided so do bring some of you own. Some of the windows are tricky to close as you would expect on an old house, but nothing a good push could not solve. Hill to town is steep, but a good daily workout! All in all would go back again.
Do not book this property. A previous review described this property as filthy with an overgrown garden and a second floor with two bedrooms said to be unusable for safety reasons. When contacted by telephone and e mail before our booking Sykes Cottages assured me that the issues had been addressed and dealt with. On entering the property there was an overwhelming musty smell. We had to clear away the many cobwebs and clean all surfaces as soon as we entered. The oven was too disgustingly filthy to ever use, as was the tiny filter coffee maker. Of the many mugs only two were usable as the rest were disgustingly worn away. The bath mat in the En Suite bathroom was dreadful, full of stains and falling apart. The towels were tiny and very thin and worn. The one tea towel provided had two large holes in it. Most of the blinds in the property were broken. The television was described as a Smart TV, it was not. There were no covers on the Conservatory cushions so they were stained and horrible. The two sun loungers had no cushions. We only needed the first floor bedrooms but we investigated those on the second floor. The stairs to them were so unsafe our dog would not use them and we found them very scary to navigate. It was impossible to stand in the two bedrooms at the top of the stairs. We were warned that if we left any rubbish in the bin on the property rather than in the bin on the nearby street, we would be charged for removal by the gardener, but only 1 bin bag was provided for the week. The garden and paths to it were so overgrown it was clear that no gardener had been on the property for a very long time. We were told that we had to strip the beds before leaving or would again be charged. We have stayed in many, many rental properties and been provided with a wide range of welcome packs. At Heselwood we werent even provided with a tea bag, only 2 dishwasher tablets. This property could be amazing.
I could not fault this property. It was large, comfortable and full of character.A particularly pleasant discovery was the ample car parking and large gardens.
Garden unusable as so overgrown, cleaning very poor standard. We only had 6 and a baby and had to put off the other 2 who were going to join as the accommodation was not suitable. The couple on the top floor had a really poor experience.
